Lakers Contacted Free-Agent Shannon Brown

The Los Angeles Lakers were in contact with Shannon Brown’s representative on Wednesday inquiring about his free-agency status, wrote the Los Angeles Times’ Mark Medina.

Brown opted out of his contract, which would have paid him $2.37 million, and after backing up Kobe Bryant in the two title runs it seems as though Brown will part ways with the Lakers. Brown made $2.15 million last season, but the Lakers have only a “mini mid-level” to use during free agency. A ‘mini mid-level’ will allow the Lakers to use a three year, $9.4 million offer, but it is unlikely that they will give that to Brown.

“We talked about Shannon but it’s a little early to see where it goes,” said agent Mark Bartelstein on Wednesday.

Brown was a key piece on the Lakers’ bench last season, but his play slipped late after a hot start. By the time the season ended Brown was no longer a reliable scorer, and his incredible leaping ability and athleticism were the only things going for him. If the Lakers want to make it back to the Finals, they should begin to look for upgrades at Brown’s position.
