The Los Angeles Lakers were expected to be one of the more busy teams in free agency this summer as they went into it with the most cap space in the NBA, especially with the expectation that LeBron James will be playing elsewhere.

One player they were immediately linked to was Quentin Grimes, and it appears he has agreed to a contract with the team, per Shams Charania of ESPN:

Grimes was originally drafted 25th overall by the New York Knicks out of Houston. He has spent time in the Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers organizations before now landing with the Lakers. The 26-year-old notably built a strong relationship with Luka Doncic during their time together with the Mavericks and now will get the opportunity to reunite with him in L.A.

In 75 games (19 starts) for the 76ers last season, Grimes played in 29.4 minutes per game and averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 45% from the field and 33.4% from 3-point range on 5.1 attempts. That was a down shooting year for Grimes as he is a 36.6% 3-point shooter in his career.

While it remains to be seen exactly how the Lakers will fill out their roster this summer, Grimes was one of their priorities and will be a valuable 3-and-D piece either in their starting backcourt or as their first guard off the bench. He is certainly a nice addition to the team and fits Doncic’s timeline, but the Lakers will need to make some other needle-moving upgrades if they want to compete for a championship in 2026-27.

Lakers getting to work in free agency

The big domino to fall for the Lakers in free agency was them landing Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz. Since then, they have gotten to work on filling out the roster by agreeing to terms with Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashivili and Collin Sexton.

With that though, they have already lost Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard in free agency with Rui Hachimura expected to depart as well.
