Marcus Smart has been the heart and soul of the Los Angeles Lakers, constantly bringing the fire and competitive spirit on both ends of the floor.
Smart has been a huge positive force on the Lakers as one of their leaders, something head coach JJ Redick recently spoke highly of. While Smart may not carry superstar status, he’s a strong voice in the locker room and holds the ability to keep teammates accountable.
The veteran guard has been out of the lineup for the last six games due to a right ankle injury, but Redick said Smart was able to participate in an on-court workout and could play as soon as Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN:

Los Angeles managed to win four of the six games Smart missed, but getting him back would be a major boost as they’ve missed him in clutch situations. The offense runs through the “Big 3” but Smart is a steadying presence who has a knack for making winning plays when the team needs them the most.
Health has always been an issue for Smart during his career, though it’s to be expected with how hard he plays every night. Smart is constantly seen getting physical with opponents and is the first person to hit the floor for the basketball. He’s thankfully avoided bigger injuries, but the nicks and bruises can take a toll on anyone.
In order for the Lakers to have any shot at winning a title, they’ll need their roster at full strength come playoff time. Los Angeles put together a strong month of March, but their blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder was a painful reminder of how far they are from being a true contender.
Marcus Smart named finalist for award
The Lakers signed Smart in free agency and have enjoyed what the veteran has brought to the team both on and off the floor. Smart has never been afraid to use his voice to motivate teammates and keep players accountable, and so far that’s helped Los Angeles climb the Western Conference ranks.
Smart has been a positive influence for the organization and he was recognized for his leadership as he was named a finalist for the 2025-26 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award.
