The NBA announced Los Angeles Lakers superstar guard Luka Doncic as the Western Conference Player of the Month for March. This is the seventh time in Doncic’s career that he has received this award and the second time this season as he also won in January.
Doncic had one of the greatest singular months in recent NBA history as he averaged 37.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.3 steals while shooting 49.2% from the field and 39.2% from 3-point range. He has reached the 30-point mark in 13 consecutive games and has now scored at least 40 in the Lakers’ last three contests.
The most notable game throughout this run was undoubtedly his 60-point outing on the second night of a back-to-back on the road against the Miami Heat. Doncic was 18-of-30 from the field and knocked down nine 3-pointers while also chipping in seven rebounds, three assists and five steals.
A week earlier, Doncic nearly dropped a 50-point triple-double as he finished with 51 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists against the Chicago Bulls. And in the following contest, he would knock down the game-winning shot with under a second remaining in overtime to lift the Lakers to a win over the Denver Nuggets.
Doncic also made history with his performance this month, breaking Kobe Bryant’s franchise record for the most points in the month of March while also joining Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history with 600 points in March.
Most important, however, is that the Lakers as a team were on fire throughout the month as they went 15-2, which included a nine-game win streak. The Lakers also picked up a number of victories over playoff teams such as the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Doncic has noted that his numbers wouldn’t mean as much if they were coming in losses so his play helping the Lakers turn the corner down the stretch of the season means that much more.
The individual accolades are piling up for Doncic with many placing him firmly in the race for NBA MVP as well, but his ultimate focus remains on the Lakers winning and making a deep run in the playoffs.
JJ Redick believes Luka Doncic should win NBA MVP
Doncic himself hasn’t really campaigned much for himself to win the NBA MVP award, but his head coach has not been shy about doing so for him. JJ Redick made it clear that he feels Doncic should win the award as long as he continues to play at this level and the Lakers finish this season strong.
