After stepping down from his honorary Vice President role last summer, Magic Johnson has rejoined the Lakers in an advisory role to President Jeanie Buss. Although he lacks the front office knowledge, Magic rejoining the Lakers should only be a positive. As one of the best players to ever play the game, players look up to Magic and his appeal may have some sway moving forward.
The future of Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak, however, appears to be in doubt. The duo set a deadline of “contending” in the Western Playoffs for this season. The Lakers young core is still a good year or two before contending for anything more than a six or seven seed in the conference.
The Lakers would be wise to pave the path for new management to take over that doesn’t involve the Buss family. A young, analytic focused front office could do wonders for the Lakers moving forward.
