Lakers News: D’Antoni Talks About the Lakers Amnestying World Peace

6883012The Los Angeles Lakers decided to use their amnesty provision on forward Metta World Peace, a fan favorite and someone who played a vital role in the team’s Game 7 victory in 2010 NBA Finals.

World Peace was a defensive presence for the Lakers on the perimeter and gave the roster some much needed toughness. However, due to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the punitive taxes, the Lakers made a financial decision when amnestying World Peace.

Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni spoke to reporters at the Summer League, and Yahoo! Sports writes that he believes the decision was a “by-product of the CBA.”

“Obviously it’s a byproduct of the CBA,” D’Antoni said at the team’s Summer League in Las Vegas. “As a person and player, I couldn’t find anyone better. He’s great. I enjoyed coaching him. I hope he finds something great. He deserves it. It’s not the coaches. It’s management. They have to manage the cap.”

If the Lakers were to stick with World Peace for the remainder of the season, his contract would have expired in time for the free agency class of 2014.  Los Angeles has a lot of cap space to work with next off season and the front office is hoping to create another championship team very shortly.
