The trade sending Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Detroit Pistons rocked the NBA world on Monday and kicked off what is sure to be an exciting trade deadline. This move will make an impact on the NBA landscape, and everyone, including the Los Angeles Lakers, will have to adjust accordingly.
With that being the case, LN News Feed host Trevor Lane takes a look at the deal from a Lakers perspective. Seeing a star leave Los Angeles puts the Lakers back in a place that they haven’t been in a few years and depending on the Clippers plans moving forward, that could be a very good thing.
However, the deal also means that the Clippers will be looking to rebuild their franchise under the watchful eye of billionaire owner Steve Ballmer, which means that the Lakers could soon have competition for free agents as the other Los Angeles team makes move to clear cap space.
Could that eventually haunt the Lakers, particularly since the legendary Jerry West is now part of the Clippers front office and will be able to help recruit superstar-level players?
Additionally, the Clippers taking a step back, along with the unfortunate injury to New Orleans Pelicans big man DeMarcus Cousins, could mean that the Lakers’ playoff window is back to being cracked slightly open. Might that change their plans at the trade deadline?
