According to the LA Times, HBO Sports, partnering with Mandalay Sports Media and Iconomy Multi-Media & Entertainment, has begun production and photography for a documentary on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The documentary will air in early 2015 and HBO Sports President Ken Hershman is excited and thankful to delve into the life of the all-time great:

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a legendary figure and an American sports icon. While he has lived so much of his life in the media spotlight, his extraordinary story has never been explored in depth, and we are grateful to Kareem and his team for allowing us to bring this story to life.

Kareem, of course, is the NBA’s All-Time leader with 38,387 career points and won five championships with the Lakers in the 1980s. However, he has had something of a rocky relationship with the media over the years.

This relationship has improved over time and Kareem recently wrote a piece for Time Magazine on the Donald Sterling scandal.

The film will be directed by Ron Yassen and produced by Deborah Morales. The executive producer will be Mike Tollin.
