Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic is a generational offensive player, capable of single-handedly propping up a team no matter what kind of defense is in front of him.
As a bigger guard, Doncic has the advantage of being able to see over layers of defense but he combines that with a natural feel and sense of where players on the floor are. While he has every conventional pass in the book, he’s also got a creative side to his game that allows him to bend defenses to his will even more.
For example, Doncic made several highlight-reel passes that either resulted in points or at the very least a quality open look. His playstyle has its risks, but it’s hard to argue with results such as a 129-118 victory over the Bulls for the Lakers on Monday night.
Head coach JJ Redick got to see Doncic’s play style up close as his teammate, so he understands he needs to let the Lakers star’s creative side shine to get the best version of him, via Spectrum SportsNet:
“It’s similar to some of the heat checks. I’ve talked about this, he’s an engine that’s fully on and he likes to create out there. That’s part of what makes him a great player. I think because I played with him, I have a pretty good understanding of that. Not to say it doesn’t test your patience at times, but you have to be willing to live with some of the stuff that he tries because more often than not, you’re gonna get a great result and he had some great passes, he made some amazing shots. But there’s that creative element that he needs to thrive, and you’ve got to allow that.”
Luka can sometimes be overzealous on the offensive end, either taking an ill-advised shot or whipping a pass that a teammate isn’t ready for. Those kinds of misplays and turnovers would bother any head coach, but Redick has seen what Doncic can do to a game when he’s having fun creating on the floor.
The best players in history found ways to make their teammates better, and Doncic does that and more for the Lakers. The team has a long way to go to be a contender, but Doncic certainly has the talent to get them there.
