The NBA is informing teams of their tax bills for the 2012-13 season, and as expected, the Lakers are well over the league limits. In fact, Marc Stein tweeted that the Lakers will pay more in luxury taxes than any other team.

Despite such a large luxury tax charge, the Lakers were a first round exit and did not make much noise in the postseason. In comparison, the reigning champions, the Miami Heat, paid a little over $13 million in luxury taxes but were able to succeed in the playoffs.

Luckily, the team will have everyone except Steve Nash off the books in the summer of 2014, but knowing this franchise, it will be spending a lot of money regardless  in the next offseason. The free agency class is filled with talent, and if the Lakers want to return to championship form, they must be willing to do what it takes to lure in free agents.
