August 2 was an important day for the Los Angeles Lakers as it marked Luka Doncic becoming extension-eligible. Thankfully, L.A. wasted no time and signed their newest superstar to a three-year, $165 million contract with a player option after the second year.
This is a monumental day for the Lakers as they have Doncic solidified as their next building block. As LeBron James nears the end of his journey with the purple and gold, the Slovenian star is next in line to lead this illustrious franchise.
As the 26-year-old acclimates himself to his new home, he continues to give back to the community. After signing his new deal, Doncic announced that he is paying it forward to 77 aspiring basketball athletes to help them achieve their goals and aspirations:
Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.
— Luka Doncic (@luka7doncic) August 2, 2025
This comes as no surprise as helping out in the community has been a mission for Doncic and his foundation to help the next generation of young athletes. Sports is a crucial point of childhood, allowing kids to experiment and try all sorts of activities to see what sticks.
Particularly for the Lakers star, he expressed his love for soccer and how it helped him develop into the basketball player he is today. Now that Doncic has solidified his future, he can focus on bringing championships back to the Lakers organization.
In a handful of months, Lakers fans have began to see the character of Doncic and how giving he is. Ultimately, this shows how committed he is to continue pushing the sports world forward and hopefully, he does that with the notoriety of being a Laker.
Mavericks CEO Rick Welts has no regrets about trading Luka Doncic
To this day, the shock of Luka Doncic being dealt to the Lakers has yet to subside for both sides. The Dallas Mavericks traded the superstar despite him leading them to the NBA Finals the season before, leaving many people, including their fans, puzzled.
When recently speaking about the trade though, Mavericks CEO Rick Welts said that he has no regrets about how the organization went about dealing Doncic but did wish him the best moving forward with the Lakers, except when they’re playing Dallas.
