The NBA announced that Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic was named Western Conference Player of the Month for January.
In 15 games in January, Doncic averaged 34 points, 7.2 rebounds, 9.1 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 50.6% from the field and 39.2% from 3-point range.
Luka scored 30 or more points in 11 of the 15 games he suited up in while posting eight double-doubles in the month. Doncic also had three triple-doubles in January, including a historic one in the final game of the month against the Washington Wizards in which he secured it in the first half.
The Slovenian star also reached the 40-point mark twice in January, with the highest being a 46-point performance against the Chicago Bulls when he also added 12 assists and seven rebounds while knocking down eight 3-pointers in a victory.
This is the sixth time in his career that Doncic has been named Western Conference Player of the Month, but his first as a member of the Lakers. The last time Luka won this award was in March of 2024 when he was still a member of the Dallas Mavericks.
The Western Conference Players of the Month this season have been those whom most consider the best players in the game today. Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic won for October while Oklahoma City Thunder star and reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took it home for December. And now Doncic joins that list as he looks to possibly push himself into the MVP race if he can continue this level of play and the Lakers move up in the standings.
Luka has been a regular fixture in these awards this season as he has also been named Western Conference Player of the Week twice, including in the last week of January when he averaged 34.3 points on 49.2% shooting from the field, 10.7 rebounds, 9.7 assists and 2.0 steals in 38.0 minutes.
Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month as he averaged 29.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
Luka Doncic ‘in a great place’ one year after joining the Lakers
Being traded from the Mavericks to the Lakers was a difficult move for Luka Doncic as he has been open that he had hoped to play his entire career with that franchise. But now, one year after the trade that shocked the entire basketball world, Doncic feels he is in a great place and loves playing for the Lakers.
The trade was a shock at first, but Luka appears to have settled into his new home nicely and his play on the court has reflected that.
