Luka Doncic has been on an offensive tear as of late and it’s resulted in four consecutive victories for the Los Angeles Lakers. In the recent win against the Chicago Bulls, Doncic dominated the evening as he set a his new Lakers high in points with 51.
Doncic shot 17-of-31 from the field, including 9-of-14 from beyond the arc and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. It was an offensive masterpiece from Doncic, who shot it from everywhere on the floor and made Chicago pay every time they only left one defender on him.
Doncic’s scoring outburst started to come on in the second quarter after it seemed like Matas Buzelis starting talking trash to him on the court. The Lakers star seemed to enjoy the banter as he was seen smiling after scoring and even talking to player on the Bulls bench.
After the game, Doncic admitted that Buzelis’ words made him even more aggressive on the floor.
“Oh, yeah, it feels special. I obviously haven’t had a 50-point game in a year, so it feels very special. In the second quarter I felt that somebody started talking to me, so that woke me up,” Doncic said. “Matas Buzelis. I was surprised, I was shocked. I’m not gonna say what he said but if I said it, I would definitely get a [technical foul]. But really, these games, sometimes you’re going easy and we kind of went easy in the first quarter, then he woke me up.”
Trash-talking someone like Doncic is never a good idea as stars like him enjoy having someone motivate them on the court. While Buzelis ended up having a good scoring night of his own, it didn’t compare to the performance Doncic had in the win.
Doncic isn’t afraid to go right at players whenever he feels slighted and it almost seems like he seems to prefer it some nights. While Doncic will certainly start talking trash to opponents, oftentimes it’s them that like to try and get Doncic off his game.
As a young player, Buzelis will learn that poking the bear isn’t the best way to go about winning games in the NBA as it will likely come back to bite them. Doncic’s scoring output has hit another level recently, and he’ll need to put on another show if the Lakers hope to take down the Denver Nuggets on Saturday.
