Lakers News: Steve Blake Cleared for Full Contact

One of the biggest injury concerns for the Los Angeles Lakers heading into the upcoming NBA preseason is the health of Dwight Howard’s back. With the start of the regular season only a few weeks away, Howard’s playing status has been the main topic of discussion and remains uncertain moving forward.

Another player with an uncertain playing status as of late has been backup point guard Steve Blake. After stepping on a spike strip in a parking lot, Blake sustained a puncture wound on his left foot and would likely sit out three weeks as a result.

Apparently, Blake has made a quick recovery from this injury and is ready to get back on the basketball floor for the Lakers. The veteran guard said the following via Twitter:

Good news…Dr said I’m cleared for full contact! Thanks for the support! @lakers #gameon instagr.am/p/QXjqUBHnbJ/

— Steve Blake (@SteveBlake5) October 4, 2012

The news was confirmed by Lakers PR director John Black.

This is great news for the Lakers with the start of the preseason only days away on Sunday, Oct. 7.

With no lack of players ready to shoulder the load in Blake’s absence, the backcourt for the Lakers was secure with Chris Duhon and Darius Morris. Even though Duhon and Morris are viable options to backup Steve Nash at floor general, Blake is currently the best option of the three.

Last season, Blake averaged5.2 points and 2.2 assists in 23.3 minutes per game. Blake’s time on the floor may begin to decrease this season with Duhon possibly splitting time as the backup behind Nash. Morris will likely continue to used in garbage time situations unless he makes a lasting impression during the pre-season.
