Lakers News: Steve Nash Ranks 54th In SI’s Top 100 Players

Steve Nash had perhaps the worst statistical season of his career last season, but was only two made shots away from reaching the 50-40-90 club once again.  In his first season with the Lakers, injuries plagued the 39-year-old as he suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left leg after a collision with Damian Lillard in the second game of the season. Nash would return in December, but was never fully recovered.

With a new season, Nash is expected to be completely healthy from all his injuries, and the former two-time Most Valuable Player will look to redeem himself. Although he will turn 40 in February, Rob Mahoney of Sports Illustrated ranked Nash 54th in their Top 100 NBA Players of 2014:

“He’s still an excellent shooter and passer with arguably the best feel for offense in the league. That level of vision — and the corresponding ability to elevate an offense — doesn’t fade overnight.”

Since Nash wasn’t completely healthy last season, he became more of a spot-up shooter as Kobe Bryant was more of a playmaker for the Lakers. While it took some time, Nash played extremely well in his role and helped the Lakers make the playoffs after a 17-25 start.

This upcoming season, Nash will likely return as the team’s main playmaker. While he shouldn’t be expected to orchestrate the offense as much as he did in Phoenix, Nash’s ability to provide easy shots for his teammates will be crucial as the Lakers look to exceed expectations.
