The Luka Doncic era is fully underway with the Los Angeles Lakers as the organization is committed to build the roster to maximize his skills and talents on the floor.
So far, the Lakers have been one of the most active teams in the offseason as they’ve managed to bolster the team without having to give up assets in trades. Los Angeles signed Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton and are reportedly set to sign Marcus Smart once he clears waivers. The Lakers also brought back Jaxson Hayes to shore up their frontcourt depth.
Overall, L.A. has done well to surround Doncic with more talent and the superstar seems invested in the future of the franchise despite not having signed a contract extension yet.
As a sign of his commitment to the Lakers, Doncic has been working the phones recruiting players to play with him in Los Angeles, via Dan Woike of The Athletic:
In addition to that, league sources said, Dončić has been an active recruiter for the Lakers this summer and helped secure commitments from Ayton and Smart after both unexpectedly hit free agency via contract buyouts.
Doncic reaching out to players like Ayton and Smart speaks volumes about his desire to win with the Lakers and win a championship. There was some smoke entering the offseason about whether or not Doncic would sign long-term, but his actions and words up to this point all seem to indicate that L.A. is his new home.
Ayton slots in as the Lakers’ starting center while Smart can serve either as a starter or super reserve off the bench. Both veterans fill massive needs on the roster and should help Doncic perform at his optimum level on the floor.
Besides recruiting players, Doncic has also reportedly been focused on his diet and conditioning and it shows in the limited photos that have circulated online. With a healthy and motivated Doncic coupled with a better supporting cast, the Lakers are inching closer to the top tier of title contenders.
