Ronnie Price was signed to very little fanfare right before the start of training camp, but quickly got the attention of both Byron Scott and Kobe Bryant. Price quickly became a big part of the rotation before taking over the starting role in early December.

Even though Price performed beyond expectations, he understands that he is a backup in this league and has spoken about returning to the Lakers in that role, something the Lakers are reportedly interested in as well according to Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News:

The Lakers are interested in keeping Price as a third-string point guard, a role Price will gladly accept.

The play of Jordan Clarkson in the second-half of the season has given fans and the organization hope that he could be the team’s starting point guard of the future. His play, however, won’t stop the Lakers from adding someone else at the position either in the draft or through free agency.

If the team were to add someone like Emmanuel Mudiay or D’Angelo Russell in the draft, Price could be the veteran presence and steady floor general when needed. If they were to bring in Rajon Rondo or Goran Dragic, Price would be more of a practice player and insurance policy.

Players like Price are perfect for the 11th and 12th man roles. He is someone who will work hard and be ready when his number is called. The Lakers could do far worse than him at the end of their bench.
