LeBron James wants to finish career competing for championships, and he might get that opportunity with the Los Angeles after a strong start to the 2025-26 season. Despite that though, parity is at an all-time high in the NBA, especially in the Western Conference.

The closest James got to another ring was in 2023 when L.A. reached the Western Conference Finals. Unfortunately, the Denver Nuggets had the Lakers’ number and truly outclassed them in a sweep.

The main reason behind that was Nikola Jokic, who is a multi-time MVP and solidified himself as the best player in the world that year. Not much has changed in two years, but there is a bit more competition at the top.

However, it looks like James’ opinion on Jokic has not changed as he called the Serbian star the most dominant and complete player he has ever competed against, via the “Mind the Game” podcast with Steve Nash:

This year, the MVP race is expected to be more up in the air given the amount of star power across the league. Luka Doncic, a teammate of James’, will likely be in the mix along with Jokic and reigning champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

But, the 23-year veteran is not wrong about his perception on the Nuggets star because he may be the most talented big man the league has seen. Jokic can dissect any defense, he is never sped up and can make any pass on the floor.

Opposing teams have tried turning Jokic into a scorer, but he can score 40 or 50 points with ease while getting a near triple-double regardless. The Lakers have yet to play the Nuggets this season and it will be intriguing to see the defensive game plan when they do.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder are still the favorite, Denver remains a formidable threat and L.A. could very well matchup with either team in the playoffs. Seeing how the Lakers can stack up against Jokic and company with a retooled roster is something to monitor as they determine whether they can contend with the upper echelon of the Western Conference.

Luka Doncic & LeBron James commend Deandre Ayton

LeBron James is still working himself up to speed with his teammates, but early signs of chemistry are already brewing. One connection in particular is with Deandre Ayton as a pick-and-roll partner and the center is reaping the benefits.

However, Ayton is also going the extra mile to do things outside of scoring. Luka Doncic and James have noticed Ayton doing the little things and they recently commended his efforts.
