Lakers Will Explore Princeton Offense Next Season

The Los Angeles Lakers have won their past five championships running an offense mastered by Tex Winter and Phil Jackson. The Triangle offense utilized the players’ best abilities and it allowed everyone to shine no matter their skill level. Kobe Bryant has seen the Triangle offense nearly his entire NBA career, but he had to change his way when Mike Brown became head coach.

Bryant and his Lakers teammates had trouble adjusting to Brown’s offense, and it seems as though the players will have to do more adjusting in 2012-13. The Lakers are looking to add the Princeton offense to their arsenal next season, but Kobe Bryant is completely on board, via Pro Basketball Talk.

“It’s a great offense,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. “It’s exactly what we need. It takes us back to being able to play by making reads and reacting to defenses. It takes a great deal of communication, but that’s where we’re at our best: Reading and reacting as opposed to just coming down and calling sets. Calling sets make you vulnerable.

“There’s so many threats, so many options, it’s very tough to defend. Against the type of defenses that teams play nowadays, they load up on one side and are constantly coming with help from the weak side. The Princeton offense makes it very, very tough to lock in on one particular player.”

The Lakers have added Steve Nash to the roster this summer, meaning they will have the perfect point guard to use for the offense. Los Angeles’ offense was stagnant at times last season, but the addition of the Princeton offense should help fix that problem.
