The 2017 NBA offseason has turned into a whirlwind of events, as exciting as the 2016-17 season itself. While the Western conference bolsters their rosters in hopes of competing against the Golden State Warriors, Kyrie Irving and Carmelo Anthony’s trade demands in the Eastern conference have the league holding still.
When Irving made his demand for a trade public, he put the players and entire organization in a strange position. However, Anthony’s situation involves a no-trade clause, communicating his desire that he wants to join the Rockets.
The Knicks have been very limited in the trade talks they can actually pull off, with Anthony not hesitant to use his trade clause should they not satisfy his needs. Anthony reportedly still has only one destination in mind, following the departure of Phil Jackson, via Marc Berman of the NY Post:
Phil Jackson is out as president, but the franchise’s strategy hasn’t changed much. A stalemate has ensued as sources indicate Anthony only wishes to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Rockets. Not even Cleveland, which is in turmoil, is good enough for Anthony as the Cavaliers are dealing with Kyrie Irving’s trade demand.
The 14-year veteran has remained rather quite during the offseason, while dealing with the spiraling media in New York. While news of his separation from LaLa Anthony became official, she came forth and stated that his preference is to stay close to his family.
The Knicks, possibly unable to get a quality offer, stated that they have halted trade talks surrounding Anthony. New York is trying to persuade Anthony to open his preferences to possibly include the Portland Trail Blazers and Oklahoma City Thunder, but recent indications state Anthony remains stubborn on his preference.
Anthony envisions joining the Rockets and their electric offense, spacing the floor and having an opportunity to play with ‘banana boat’ buddy Chris Paul. While Anthony understands that his role would be heavily reduced, he does comprehend that this would be his best opportunity to overthrow the Warriors.
