NBA: Preseason-Utah Jazz at Los Angeles LakersIt didn’t take long for Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and general manager Chris Grant to pick their new head coach. After ousting Byron Scott and reaching out to Phil Jackson, the Cavaliers plan to re-hire former coach Mike Brown for their vacant coaching position.

Brown coached in Cleveland for five seasons and compiled an impressive 272-138 record. After losing in the conference semifinals in 2010, Gilbert fired Brown who landed on his feet with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011.

In the lockout season, Brown led the Lakers to a 41-25 record, but they lost in the second round to the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games. Brown was given the benefit of the doubt as general manager Mitch Kupchak stated patience in giving him a full training camp.

With the additions of guard Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard, Kupchak pulled the plug on Brown after a 1-4 start to the 2012-13 season.

UPDATE: With Mike Brown signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Lakers will get some relief of the $6.5-7 million that they still owe Mike Brown. The relief can be up to half of their salary, per a tweet from the LA Times Mike Bresnahan.

Lakers have been told they’d get “some” relief from $6.5 million-$7 million they owe Mike Brown. It’s not entire sum, though. Maybe half.
