NBA News: Lakers Assistant Darvin Ham Headed to Myanmar

The National Basketball Association is a global game and the reaches of the league are increasing rapidly. The NBA has made its way to countries like China and India, and is stamping its footprint in Africa. Still, the league office is looking to grow more and the United States has decided to partake on the voyage.

The United States of America will be sending basketball players and coaches to Myanmar, a country in southeast Asia. Yahoo Sports writes that the US will be looking to create a closer bond with the people in Myanmar and finds that sports is a great way to ease that process

The U.S. Embassy said Sunday that four ”sports envoys” will be in the country this week as part of a U.S. State Department-sponsored program ”to emphasize the importance of academics, cooperation, and respect for diversity.”

One of the four heading to Myanmar is Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Darvin Ham. Joining Ham will be Charlotte Bobcats basketball team manager Rich Cho, former WNBA player Allison Feaster and former NBA player Marty Conlon.

The group will participate in sports workshops with the youth of Myanmar and hopefully get them familiarized with one of the biggest sports in America. Myanmar has a national basketball team, but the sport is not very popular in the country. Hopefully this trip by the four basketball minds gets more people interested in the great game of basketball.
