Gasol, who was drafted by the Lakers and traded to Memphis for his brother Pau, is the first European-born NBA player to win the award. He helped lead the Grizzlies to a 56-26 record and the fifth seed in the Western Conference.

With the departure of forward Rudy Gay, Gasol has assumed the role as the face of the Grizzlies and helped instill a defensive mentality throughout the team.

While he didn’t have eye-popping stating in the major defensive categories, it’s clear that voters rewarded Gasol for helping anchor the Grizzlies stifling defense.
