NBA News: Nets Sign Jason Collins, Could Play Lakers On Sunday

Jason Collins had been searching for a team since coming out publicly last year. The Nets were in desperate need of a back up big after the injury to Brook Lopez and the subsequent trade of Reggie Evans in the deal for Marcus Thorton.

According to Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnaroski, the Nets have agreed on terms to sign Collins to a 10 day contract:

Jason Collins has reached agreement on a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets, clearing the way for the first openly gay athlete in major professional sports history, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Nets had been hoping to sign recently bought out forward Glen Davis, but sources have confirmed he will be signing with the Los Angeles Clippers. Collins recently worked out for the Nets and the team was simply waiting to see what would happen with Davis before committing to Collins.

Collins has been working out in Southern California waiting for a call from teams in need of his services. With the Nets facing the Lakers on Sunday night, there is a possibility that Collins could suit up.

Collins has played in the NBA for 12 seasons and has been a consistent back up big. With the Nets signing Collins, he will be the first openly homosexual player in the NBA. Collins finally signing for a team is a great milestone and step in the right path for the NBA.
