Pau Gasol and Steve Blake Happy to See ’71-’72 Lakers Keep Record

PauGasol3The Los Angeles Lakers snapped their three game losing streak Wednesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the 1971-72 Lakers also scored a victory on the night.

The Miami Heat suffered their first loss in weeks against the injured Chicago Bulls team, ending their 27-game winning streak. Miami has been playing exceptional basketball and there was fear from Lakers fans that Miami could break the record for most consecutive victories. At 27 wins, the Miami Heat had the second longest streak in NBA history and they were going after the ’71-’72 Lakers’ record of 33 straight.

However, the Bulls played an excellent game and used their home crowd to defeat the Heat. The current Lakers players were relieved that the record will remain with the franchise and the Los Angeles Times spoke to Pau Gasol and Steve Blake about the Heat’s loss.

Some players were even happy.

“In a big way, I am,” said Pau Gasol, who in his six seasons with the Lakers has become friends with the coach of that ’71-72 team, Bill Sharman. “I’m glad that we kept the streak. It was about time that Miami lost.”

“I guess now that it’s over, it’s kind of nice that the Lakers still have it,” Steve Blake said.

The Lakers’ record stood for over 40 years and this was the first time it was in real jeopardy. Not many people ever expected a team to threaten the mark set by the legendary Lakers team, but the Heat surely made a good run for 33 straight. The streak lives on for one more year and even though the Heat claimed 27 victories, it is hard seeing them reaching that level again.
