Pau Gasol Spain JerseyPau Gasol has always been very proud of where he came from, representing his home country, Spain, in multiple Olympic games resulting in two Olympic silver medals. Now, Gasol will have the opportunity to help his country even more.

Madrid’s 2020 Olympic Committee has announced that Gasol will serve as a spokesman when the group makes its final presentation to the International Olympic Committee next month in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Gasol, who is currently rehabbing from off-season knee surgery, said in a statement that the Olympics are ‘more than sport’ and that Madrid could really use the boost the Olympic Games would give them, alluding to the recession Spain has been undergoing in the last few years and a 26.3 unemployment rate.

Madrid is battling Tokyo, Japan and Istanbul, Turkey for the right to host the 2020 Games. The IOC will make its announcement on September 7  in Argentina.

The 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
