Steve Nash Admits Comeback Was ‘Just Not Meant To Be’

The Los Angeles Lakers came into the season hoping that their aging backcourt would be able to stay relatively healthy this season. Unfortunately, point guard Steve Nash’s season ended before it began as Nash was unable to overcome the nerve issues that have plagued him over the last three seasons.

With Nash’s contract expiring after the season, it is widely assumed that his career is over. While he didn’t officially announce it, Nash basically admitted this much in an interview with The Bro Jake Show on TSN Radio:

I never worked as hard as I did the last 18 months, two years, twice a day almost every day to try to just give it that one last year,” said Nash. “And I finally just had to admit that it’s just not meant to be.”

The 41-year old is obviously disappointed that his career was ended due to injury, but added that he has accepted it:

[It’s] tough, but I also feel a sense of acceptance because I gave it everything I possibly could”

The acquisition of Nash, along with center Dwight Howard, was supposed to keep the Lakers in championship contention. Obviously things didn’t work out that way as Nash was injured in his second game as a Laker, Howard left after one season, and the Lakers have spiraled downhill, becoming one of the worst teams in the league.

His time in Los Angeles didn’t work out the way he or fans wanted, but Nash truly did put everything he could into making an impact with the organization. The two-time MVP will surely be a Hall of Famer once he is eligible. Even though he isn’t playing, Nash has been helping Lakers rookie Jordan Clarkson, working with him over the All-Star break and giving him advice throughout the season.
